Lucky Few Got A Special Glimpse On Annenberg Estate

The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands has housed many secrets from the desert over the years.

A small group of people got a rare glimpse at one of them.

The Annenbergs commissioned a Kwakiutl totem pole in 1976 for their private golf course. It was a landmark for Mrs. Annenberg to “aim for” when playing on the fifth fairway.

The pole was restored and the estate hosted a re-raising ceremony — inviting only a lucky few.

“After this ceremony is over, no one is coming to the totem pole. We invited the first 100 people who came to the center this morning to join us in this dedication,” Janice Lyle, the director of Sunnylands Center and Gardens, said.

The totem pole is on a private portion of the estate, closed off again to the public.
