Driver found dead on Date Palm Drive

Cathedral City Police found a dead motorist around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Officers found a vehicle stopped on Date Palm Drive south of Varner Road.

The vehicle’s headlights were still on when officers discovered an unresponsive driver inside, according to Cathedral City Police. The driver was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle was traveling south on Date Palm Drive from Varner Road when it veered off the roadway, causing it to hit a large telephone pole, according to Sergeant A. Ruiz.

The front of the vehicle was damaged from the accident, but it’s unknown if the driver’s death was caused by the accident.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office was investigating a cause of death. The driver’s name was not released.
