Hundreds of Coachella Valley students walk to school

More than 150 elementary students and parents in Palm Springs tied their shoes and started strolling Wednesday morning, for “International Walk to School Day.”

It’s a world-wide effort to teach kids about “safe walking techniques,” like looking both ways, as well as the health benefits of walking every day.

Word-champion boxer, and Katherine Finchy alum, taught kids how to properly warm-up before taking the one-mile trek.

“It’s very important to get out here with the kids,” Bradley said with a smile, “they’re walking to school today to promote exercise and good health.”

Katherine Finchy isn’t the only school participating. Across the globe, more than 40 countries have students hitting the cement before starting in the classroom.

“This, and many other things help support good nutrition, exercise, all the things that are really important for students to grow up to be healthy as well as educated,” said Mark Arnold, Principal at Katherine Finchy Elementary School.

A total of six schools in Desert Hot Springs, Palm Springs, and Cathedral City took part in the event.
