Man arrested for assaulting soccer player, referee

The Riveside county sheriffs department said it arrested a Cathedral city man Saturday at Thousand Palms Community Park.

Deputies say Rafael Delfin, 38, ran onto a soccer field, pushed a 9-year-old player to the ground and kicked the referee in the leg because he disagreed with a call he made.

Deputies arrested Delfin at about 11:30 a.m.

The alleged assaults occurred during a children’s soccer game.

The child was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The referee was not injured.

Delfin was arrested for battery on a child and battery on a referee.

He was transported to Riverside County Jail in the city of Indio and booked.
