Family and friends hold vigil for one year anniversary of hit and run

One year later, dealing with the loss of Zia Hoyos is not at all easier for her mother, family, and friends.

Zia’s mother Senta Florez fought back tears as she described her daughter, “Beautiful person…beautiful. Everybody loved her.”

A group gathered at the spot she was killed on Tuesday night to lay flowers, pray together, and remember the wonderful person Zia was.

A long time family friend Angelina Duke tells us, “She was very sweet, very loving, generous person, caring.” Senta says, “Just a happy girl, wanted to be an actress. She liked to perform.”

Zia was hit by a car while walking on the shoulder Gene Autry trail just north of Via Escuela, the driver left the scene.

Just a few weeks ago, help from the public led police to issue warrants for the arrest of two people.

The suspects came forward shortly after but Senta is not satisfied.

She tells us, “I mean it’s comforting that people are out there to help but unfortunately the judicial system allows them to bail out with such a low bail amount, it’s ridiculous.”

Each suspect posted bail at $5,000 dollars.

Police are now hoping tips from the public can help solve another hit and run case that left a 29 year old Bermuda Dunes man dead on Sunday.

In the wake of that hit and run earlier this week, Senta offers advice to those dealing with such terrible circumstances.

“Just have a lot of faith in god. Because you know, someone will come forward. Someone will come forward and speak up. Obviously they did for Zia and I’m thankful for that person that did come forward.”
