Coachella Valley to remember 9/11
The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will be commemorated tomorrow in the Coachella Valley in various ways, including a concert and a prayer service at a Palm Springs church that lost a parishioner who was aboard one of the jets that crashed into the World Trade Center towers.
The annual September Concert at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, organized by the Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation, was moved inside this year from the amphitheater at Palm Desert’s Civic Center Park.
The California Desert Chorale and the Palm Springs High School Band will perform at the 7 p.m. concert. Free tickets will be doled out on a first-come, first-served basis at the McCallum box office, which opens at 5:30 p.m.
Palm Springs Deputy Fire Chief John Webb will speak at a 9 a.m. prayer service at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 2800 E. Ramon Road. Parishioner Barbara Keating was among those who perished when an American Airlines jetliner crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York. Keating was heading home from Boston.
Other events include:
— A Patriot Day assembly scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. at Cahuilla Elementary School in Palm Springs, 833 E. Mesquite Ave. Cahuilla students and the Palm Springs High School band will perform, and police officers, firefighters and Marines from the base in Twentynine Palms will speak.
— A candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m. at La Quinta Civic Center, 78-495 Calle Tampico, featuring speeches by local dignitaries, music and a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.
