Palm Springs Modernism Week schedule announced
Palm Springs Modernism Week on Thursday announced its February schedule of more than 100 events.
Modernism Week is scheduled for Feb. 13-23 and celebrates the popular design aesthetic from the 1950s and 1960s. Tickets will go on sale Oct. 1 at 12 p.m. at www.modernismweek.com, according to organizers.
“Modernism Week is one of the country’s most popular annual events for architects, designers, collectors and modernism aficionados,” board chairman Chris Mobley said. “It’s a great opportunity to share the cool, iconic, modern design aesthetic of Palm Springs with visitors from around the world.”
Some new things and special events this year include:
— Debut of a film on architect and Palm Springs resident Hugh Kaptur, who designed more than 200 local residences and 40 commercial projects. Kaptur also will receive a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars;
— “Sunset Tour of Illuminated Modern,” a free nightly exhibit along Palm Canyon Drive illuminating contemporary and mid-century buildings designed by desert architects;
“Modernism Week After Dark,” nightly events including cocktail parties
and live music.
Other events include home tours, lectures, the popular double-decker
architectural bus tours, Modernism Show, walking and bike tours, tours of the
Sunnylands estate in Rancho Mirage and a vintage travel trailer exhibit, according to organizers.
Modernism Week will end with a talk given by designer Trina Turk, who will speak about “Sunnylands Chic” about the style of Leonore Annenberg and the Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands. Turk is known for her Palm Springs-inspired designs.
“Fall Season Kick-Off” Modernism Week events will be held Oct. 11-14,
aimed at priming the pump for the main event in February.
