Foreign director Jnos Szsz is up for an Oscar for his Hungarian film, ‘The Notebook’. One of his other films, ‘Le Grand Cahier‘ (Hungary/Germany/Austria/France) will be shown at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January.

His Oscar-potential film has advanced with eight other foreign features in the hunt for the prestigious entertainment award. Officials said that 76 films were originally considered in the category.

Here’s the list of nominees in the Foreign Language Film category (Alphabetical Order):

Bosnia and Herzegovina, ‘An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker,’ Director Danis Tanovic
Cambodia, ‘The Missing Picture’, Director Rithy Panh
Denmark, ‘The Hunt’, Director Thomas Vinterberg
Germany, ‘Two Lives’, Director Georg Maas
Hong Kong, ‘The Grandmaster’, Director Wong Kar-Wai
Hungary, ‘The Notebook’, Director Jnos Szsz
Italy, ‘The Great Beauty,” Director Paolo Sorrentino
Palestine, ‘Omar’, Director Hany Abu-Assad

Academy Award officials said nominations in the Foreign Language Film category for 2013 are being determined in two phases.

The Phase I committee, consisting of several hundred Los Angeles-based academy members, screened the original submissions in the category between mid-October and December 16. The group’s top six choices, built up by three additional selections voted by the Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, compose the shortlist.

The shortlist will be fanned down to the five nominees by specially invited committees in New York and Los Angeles. They will spend Friday, January 10, through Sunday, January 12, viewing three films each day and then casting their ballots.

The 86th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, January 16.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival, which will showcase Jnos Szsz’ film, ‘Le Grand Cahier’, takes place from January 3-13.
