Almost 14 lbs. of meth stashed behind car radio

Border patrol agents arrested two men on Tuesday after they seized nearly 14 lbs. of methamphetamine that was stashed underneath the dashboard of a car.

The drugs were found by El Centro Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station. The incident occurred around 6 a.m.

Agents said a 27-year-old man was driving a green 1995 Honda Accord on Highway 111 when he came to a checkpoint near Niland. A border patrol K9 team alerted agents to the vehicle, leading to a full-scale inspection.

Multiple wrapped packages of meth were found hidden behind the radio and underneath the dashboard of the car. Agents said the methamphetamine weighed 13.99 lbs. and had an estimated street value of more than $167K.

The driver was a United States citizen and his 47-year-old passenger is a permanent resident of Mexico. Authorities said both men were taken into custody and the car and methamphetamine were turned over to the DEA.

At the same checkpoint, a 48 year old man was arrested with over four lbs. of methamphetamine around 8 p.m., making for the second drug seizure within 24 hours by border patrol agents. The drugs confiscated were worth an estimated $58,080.
