Jewish Family Service to aid seniors during hot summer months

Jewish Family Service of the Desert is helping people with costs this summer — with everything from food to utility bills.

Carol Mandel of Cathedral City says the organization changed her life over the past year.

“Oh my god… I can’t even tell you how wonderful it’s been,” said Mandel.

She needed to move, but couldn’t afford it. So, she turned to the organization for help.

“When I moved out of there I had nothing,” added Mandel. “As far as a bed to sleep in or a couch. And Jewish Family Service delivered a couch for me and they got me a new bed so I was just so grateful.”

Assistance that other individuals may qualify for, too. According to Executive Director, Maureen Forman, the organization is eager to serve fixed income seniors regardless of their religious faith. Especially, during the upcoming summer months.

“So, the eyes and ears on the seniors go down in the summer and their needs often go up,” said Forman. “They can’t take transportation — it’s 110. They can’t take the bus. They can’t get to the grocery store — so just the heat makes everybody more vulnerable.”

The services provided by the Jewish Family Service of the Desert are funded in part by the Jewish Federation of the Desert.
