Cathedral City to consider appointing council member

The city council in Cathedral City will meet at 6:00 p.m. Thursday to discuss the recent resignation of Chuck Vasquez.

Vasquez resigned as a condition of a plea agreement he reached with Riverside County prosecutors. Vasquez pleaded guilty to 3 felonies and 2 misdemeanors for embezzling funds from an employee loan program at city hall.

The council is now down to just 3 members after the Vasquez resignation. Sam Toles also recently resigned.

The remaining council members will decide whether to appoint someone to fill Vasquez’s seat for the remaining weeks of his term. The spot is up for election in November and a new council member will be seated most likely the first week of December.

The council can still do business with just 3 members but wouldn’t have a quorum in the event of an absence.
