2 arrested after police set up ‘marked’ bicycle

A string of recent bike thefts in Palm Springs led officers to conduct an undercover operation using a marked bicycle that belonged to the Palm Springs Police Department.

Plain clothes officers set up surveillance of the bicycle around the city and ended up catching two suspects after seeing them try to steal the bike.

Daniel Pacheco, a 31-year-old from Palm Springs, and 21-year-old Cody Frilot, also from Palm Springs, were both arrested on charges of grand theft.

Grand theft most commonly occurs when the value of the stolen property exceeds $950, according to California law.

It’s unclear exactly when the police department set up the marked bicycle. The press release was sent to us Wednesday night.
