Valley disabled man designs clothing line hands-free

Hugo Gudino, 22, suffers from muscular dystrophy. He’s bound to a wheelchair and a breathing tube, and is unable to work.

To make a few extra bucks, he sells snacks to his roommates and staff at the Angel View home in Desert Hot Springs.

“I want to do something with my life and doing something I love,” Gudino said.

He’s switching gears and making a name for himself with his own clothing line “Just Ride Apparel.” The motorcycle fan designs T-shirts for men and women.

How does he do it? Smartnav, a hands-free cursor control.

With a reflective dot on his glasses, an infrared camera tracks his head movements, which sends instructions to his computer to move the mouse cursor.

“To right click or left, and drag just like a regular mouse,” Gudino said.

With every subtle head tilt and nod, he’s building his dream.

Gudino’s created 80 different designs on his laptop and has printed more than 200 t-shirts. selling them for $20 a piece.

“I’m doing this for my parents. I want to help them out because they helped me for over 15 years already. I want to give back to them.That’s why I’m doing this. And I want the public to know I’m going to try my best to make it work.”

Gudino started an online fundraiser to kick start his business at www.kickstarter.com.
