Car splits in half, driver survives Desert Hot Springs crash

A Lexus split in two during a crash in Desert Hot Springs, leaving the driver in critical condition, police said Saturday morning.

The driver, a 22-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was traveling southbound on Indian Canyon, one mile south of Highway 62, when the driver crashed off the road.

The Desert Hot Springs Fire Department arrived on scene and declared the driver dead. Continued life saving measures were taken, and the driver was revived, before being taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

California Highway Patrol says the driver was speeding when he hit a dip in the road and lost control.

A responder on the scene told our crew the car was likely going more than 100 miles per hour.

The front end of the 2004 Lexus sedan was more than 100 feet away from the back end.

Police could not confirm any details about the victim, but the car has military tags.

This crash is still under investigation.

The driver was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. Alcohol and/or drugs did not appear to be a factor, according to the California Highway Patrol.
