McEnroe Challenge, Warburton Tournament highlight busy weekend in the Valley

A couple celebrity tournaments made their mark in two sports for great causes.

The McEnroe Challenge for Charity entered its second year at the BNP Paribas Open and raised $80,000 spread out, depending on winners of matches in women’s doubles, men’s singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

Eisenhower Medical Center earned the most ($30,000), followed by the Andy Roddick Foundation ($20,000), the War Casualty Fund ($20,000), and the Patient Safety Movement Foundation ($10,000).

Team McEnroe consisted of the “superbrat” John McEnroe, James Blake, Tracy Austin, and Coco Vandeweghe. Team Roddick was made up by Andy Roddick, Rick Leach, Lindsay Davenport, and Madison Keys.

Team McEnroe beat Team Roddick 21-16 (tally was counted by total games in all matches).

WOMEN’S DOUBLES – Tracy Austin/Coco Vandeweghe def. Lindsay Davenport/Madison Keys (6-2).

MEN’S SINGLES – Andy Roddick def. James Blake (6-3).

MEN’S DOUBLES – John McEnroe/Blake def. Rick Leach/Roddick (6-4).

MIXED DOUBLES – Team McEnroe def. Team Roddick (6-4).

On the golf course, the 5th annual Patrick Warburton Celebrity Golf Tournament saw over a dozen celebrities teeing it up at the Classic Club in Palm Desert.

Players had to pay $2,500 per player to participate, and the event provided entertainment in golf trick shot artist Dan Boever before the Saturday shotgun start.

The two-day golf tournament will wrap up Sunday afternoon, where organizers hope all combined events throughout the week will put them over the $1 million dollar mark in money raised, all benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
