Car wash conserves to save water during drought

There is no doubt car washes use water. Stefan Mudry owns Executive Car Wash in Palm Desert. He says the car wash does its part to save water, too.

“Our water gets filtered, then put in the sewer and then it’s taken to an area where it’s reclaimed and can be done properly,” said Mudry.

Executive Car Wash recycles 50 percent of the water it uses.

“So we’re greener than just washing your car out in the street,” explained Mudry. “We use less water per car because everything is metered and only ex amount of water goes on that car it’s not just a random amount that’s used.”

Local water districts have not restricted professional car washes. But, Mudry still worries he may have to raise prices.

“If we have to use 36 percent less and we can’t do that then they’re going to fine us so at that point we’ll have to figure out what we’ll have to do to operate daily,” he said.

Joe Adams of Indio gets his car washed once a week.

“I figure that they recycle most of the water,” said Adams. “So I don’t consider it a waste of water.”

Other people we talked with agreed.

“I only get my car washed maybe once a month I think its okay,” said Joan Ray of Indio.

“I have to have it every so often because I’m going in and there are going to be people in my car so I have to make it look extra pretty,” added Marci Schwartz of Palm Desert.
