Aztecs move on, but tough results for other teams in Valley

It was a tough day for many of the Coachella Valley’s teams on the diamond. The CIF-SS first round opened in both baseball and softball, but only three teams were able to advance past the first round in Thursday action.

In high school baseball, the 2014 CIF-SS runners-up Palm Desert looked to get back in the title game, and started off on the right track with a 5-1 win over Northview. The Aztecs fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second, but scored three runs in the bottom half to take a lead they would not relinquish.

In high school softball, Yucca Valley stunned Desert Christian Academy in the top of the sixth inning. The Trojans turned a 1-1 tie ballgame into a 7-1 rout, capped by Ayriel Bransford-Fonseca’s three-run home run to right.

DVL winners La Quinta also advanced on the softball diamond, beating Monrovia 10-3.

In boys golf, Palm Desert advanced to the SCGA regional state qualifier next week. They placed second as a team, shooting 388, led by Jackson Polakov’s 1-over 72. The Aztecs play Thursday, May 28th at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena.
