Baby zebra dies at The Living Desert
The baby zebra who was born at The Living Desert less than two months ago has died.
“We are greatly saddened by the loss of our baby Zebra,” says Allen Monroe, President & CEO of The Living Desert. “It is surprising how quickly we become attached to such a charismatic animal and I know that she will be missed by our guests, volunteers and staff.”
Officials said the cause of death hasn’t been determined yet. A preliminary exam performed at the Tennity Wildlife Hospital and Conservation Center was inconclusive.
The foal will now be transported to a regional animal health agency where a full necropsy (animal autopsy) will be performed.
The zebra was born at The Living Desert on April 20, 2015. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 posted photos of the baby standing with her proud mother after zoo officials made the announcement.
Zookeepers said Grevy zebras are endangered in the wild. The Living Desert participates in the Grevy Zebra Species Survival Plan, which works with zoos across the country to promote genetic diversity within the captive population and acts as a safeguard to wild populations.
