Valley gets much needed rain

The storm that has dropped several inches of rain in Southern California today moved into the Coachella Valley.

According to CBS Local 2 meteorologist Rob Bradley ” We should expect light to moderate showers through Tuesday afternoon. “We could see some minor flooding of streets and roadways, be careful when driving, and remember to avoid wash areas that may have water in them.”

Most cities have not reported any road flooding, but Desert Hot Springs did have some minor flooding on Mesquite Avenue and Ocotillo Road. There were reports of several accidents along I-10, possibly due to wet roadways, but most were minor.

Other areas of Southern California were not as lucky. Moisture from former tropical cyclone Linda unleashed heavy rain on many parts of Southern California, producing record amounts of precipitation and wreaking havoc on the morning commute.

By 8 a.m., a record 2.6 inches of rain had fallen in downtown Los Angeles, along with 2.26 inches in Culver City, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Robbie Munroe, who added that forecasters had been expecting lower totals. The downtown total was a record for a Sept. 15 and more rain than has fallen in the region all year.

The NWS had warned that, since many areas have seen little or no rainfall in recent months, a buildup of oil on the roadways could lead to extra slippery driving conditions.
