Mother of 4 struck by alleged drunk driver in her own driveway, both legs amputated

In just a blink of an eye, Shinna Camacho’s life was changed forever.

“I never saw it coming. I was facing the opposite way."

On June 18th, Shinna Camacho was grabbing something from a friend's car.

“Two of my kids, they saw what happened. The other ones weren’t there. The two girls weren’t there but the two boys saw what happened,” Camacho explained.

And before Camacho could even react, a red Chevy Cobalt struck her from behind- pinning her against another car.

“My friend was the one who saw, saw the car and she yelled at me telling me to move. But she said you tried, you tried running but it wasn’t enough.”

After multiple surgeries, she has undergone amputation of both legs as well as a hip replacement. She’s expected to undergo long-term physical therapy to regain mobility and independence, with the use of her prosthetic legs.

“I just, I just didn’t know how to take it you know. I was just glad I was alive.”

Camacho is the mother and sole provider for her four children. She said her life will never be the same. “I’m like the main person that you know, does chores and cleaning, all those basic things that mother’s do. So I don’t know with all these things goin, now it’s gonna change my whole life.”

She wants people to know of the impacts of driving under the influence.

“Drunken driving, it’s no fun. It’s fun during the moment, but you end up breaking so many families apart. You know like, in my situation, I won’t have two legs. You know, I’m lucky to be alive and say something, but there’s families that don’t even get that chance.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Camacho's family with medical expenses. Click here to donate.

The suspect, 64-year-old Ramona Hernandez Pena, was arrested and has been charged with Driving Under the Influence. She has pleaded not guilty.
