Man killed in officer-involved shooting identified by coroner

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of the 71-year-old man who was killed during an officer-involved shooting on Saturday night in Indio.

Pedro Montanez of Indio was shot by an Indio police officer about 9:15 p.m. in the 44500 block of Jackson Street, just west of I-10, Deputy Mike Vasquez said.

Montanez was taken to JFK Memorial Hospital where he died less than an hour later.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting and the Indio police officer was placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation. This is standard procedure in shooting involving law enforcement.

August 22 Update

An officer with the Indio Police Department shot and killed a 71-year-old man at about 9:15 p.m. on the 44500 block of Jackson Street near Dillon Road outside the Rancho Fresco Market.

Authorities said the man was suspected of threatening members of the public with a knife over the weekend. The man was pronounced dead at JFK Memorial Hospital.

Sgt. Dan Marshall with the IPD confirmed to KESQ and CBS Local 2 that all of their patrol officers are expected to wear police issued body-worn cameras when they go out on patrol. We have learned that there was a camera in place at the scene, but we don’t know if the officer who fired the shots was wearing a body camera at this time.

As for the officer involved in the shooting, he has been placed on administrative leave per the Indio Police Department’s policy. The officer’s name will not be released at this time.
