Taggers vandalize multiple buildings in Palm Springs

Taggers are hitting a Palm Springs neighborhood, angering business owners, and keeping city workers on their toes trying to cover up the graffiti. The buildings are in the 700 block of North Palm Canyon. One business owner says his building has been hit several times over the past few weeks. “Over the past month we have had our property tagged about five times and we have seen other buildings that have been tagged. It’s a concern,” said Laine Scott, the owner of the store Retrospect. Scott said he is worried his customers won’t feel safe surrounded by spray-painted walls, especially on the building next door which is abandoned. The Bianco-Liddy Building could soon be under construction as a new hotel, but for now it is used for shelter by homeless people and a magnet for vandals.
“It’s not something where anyone wants to come to their store or their building or their property, I don’t like it and I would like the city of Palm Springs to be out there and try to catch these people,” Scott said. In less than 24 hour, the city’s code compliance office sent out graffiti abatement crews to repaint the walls. The majority were painted over but some remained. “They were great. We called first thing in the morning and they said they would be out to touch it up on one day and then paint the whole thing the next day,” said Tony Marchese the co-owner the restaurant Trio which was vandalized by taggers.
Some of the business owners on the block have a message for the people responsible for the vandalism. “Stop wasting our money and our city’s money. If you are going to paint something go out and sell it. Don’t paint our walls,” Marchese said. “I think my message to the people that are doing this is to get a life or learn some art skills because this isn’t even good graffiti. This is amateur graffiti,” Scott said. The Palm Springs Police Department says officers are doing regular patrols in the area. The department won’t investigate graffiti unless there is a threat of violence or hate. If you notice graffiti in the city of Palm Springs you can contact code compliance office at (760) 778-8469.
