Coachella Mayor taunts Trump supporter with local taco campaign
Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez railed against recent comments from a Donald J. Trump supporter regarding Mexican immigrants by announcing a series of taco stand events that will begin next week.
Hernandez posted a flyer online Tuesday announcing the weekly “Tacos 4 Coachella” events, stating “Donald Trump’s supporters do not like the idea of Mexicans being in this country because they will put taco stands on every corner. Steven Hernandez and his supporters love the idea.”
The events are in response to televised comments made last month by Marco Gutierrez, co-founder of Latinos for Trump. Gutierrez was interviewed on MSNBC, where he commented on the Republican presidential nominee’s proposal to deport immigrants in the country without legal permission, saying, “My culture is a very dominant culture and it’s imposing and it’s causing problems. If you don’t do something about it, you’re going to have taco trucks (on) every corner.”
Hernandez will attend each of the events, along with Coachella City Councilmen Emmanuel Martinez and Philip Bautista.
The first 250 guests at each event will get their tacos for free.
The events are scheduled for Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. on:
— Oct. 13, Harrison Street and Avenue 52;
— Oct. 20, Avenue 48 and Dillon Road;
— Oct. 27, Fourth and Harrison streets; and
— Nov. 3, Fifth Street and Vine Avenue.
