Thousands attend memorial service for fallen Palm Springs police officers

Tragedy in Palm Springs brought together thousands from all over the United States to pay their respects to officers Jose “Gil” Vega and Lesley Zerebny.

More than 18,000 people packed into the Palm Springs Convention Center to pay their respects to these fallen heroes. Bagpipes lead the procession for the memorial service for the Palm Springs police officers.

Vega’s casket was carried into the Convention Center. Sources tell KESQ & CBS Local 2 that Zerebny was cremated before the event. The crowd included politicians, residents, and hundreds of family members paying there respects for two of Palm Springs finest.

Several dozen of Officer Vega’s large family shared fond moments and memories of a phenomenal father, mentor and officer.

“He died doing what he loved to do. It was his day off and he volunteered,” said Jose Vega, Gil’s brother.

“Even though we can’t see him, that doesn’t mean he can’t see us, said Vanessa Vega, Gil’s youngest daughter. He had children.

Officer Zerebny’s family was represented by Zerebny’s cousin Pastor Joe Anady. He shared stories on how Zerebny was a committed police officer and a loving mother to her 4-month-old daughter Cora.

Officer Vega was laid to rest at Coachella Public Cemetery after the memorial service.
