Voters stressed by election, happy it’s almost over

Many voters will be happy the election is over once they cast their ballots Tuesday. The American Psychological Association found more than half of voters surveyed said the presidential election is a significant source of concern, that mostly comes from social media.

From the beginning of the campaign, voters voiced their opinions online leaving some people to make a decision to filter what they see on their social media feed.

“Everybody is kind of fighting on there and so I’ve kind of ignored social media for the most part,” Farren Lucy said.

“It stresses me out to see how different everyone is acting, like, they’re not acting how they normally would,” Cathryn Nelson said.

One voter said the election has his neighbor constantly in a debate with him.

“Knowing that I was going to vote for Hillary (Clinton), he whipped himself into a frenzy every now and then when I was over at his house,” said William Bernstein. “I told him, well, we can change the subject.”

According to the American Psychological Association, this is just a sample of what Americans say they are experiencing during this election. More than half of the people in the survey said they are stressed from this election; with four in 10 adults saying the stress stems from social media.

“I will be happy when it all goes back to normal,” Lucy said.

Comments and opinions online haven’t slowed down and may not for a while. The American Psychological Association says people can reduce the stress of this election by getting enough facts to be informed and then taking a digital break. Also, to reduce stress, avoid talking about your views if it might lead to a heated debate and finally, have your say and cast your vote.
