East valley residents look to beat the heat this weekend

Another excessive heat warning is in effect, expected to last through Saturday night, which means people will have to deal with temperatures above 110 degrees a little longer.

Ruth Abawag runs a daycare center and takes the kids she watched to Indio’s community pool every Friday.

“It’s a great way to cool down. There’s not much we can do outside and they need to be outside playing. They love it,” Abawag said.

Anthony Alvarez is the public information technician with Desert Recreational District. He says days with high temperatures are exceptionally busy.

“When we get this hot, I mean triple degree temperatures, I mean people are looking for a place to cool off. And we’re available for them. As you can see, the pool’s packed,” Alvarez said.

Others are heading to their nearest cooling center.

“As soon as the doors open, i feel like I’m in a palace,” said Gloria Bonillas, an Indio resident who takes advantage of the cooling center.

The Coachella Valley Rescue Mission is continuing their 90 days of Summer Reliefe program. They’re serving the homeless in the east valley.

“A couple weeks ago in Indio we had someone die of a heat related injury and they just didn’t get to them soon enough, so we like to go out and hand them water,” Tom Cox, CVRM’s program director said.

“if it isnt just lending me an ear so i have someone to cry to. they always have the door open to get me something to eat…just everything anything you can think of, if they can help you with it…they will.”
