Wednesday night the La Quinta city council voted to nix the controversial Coral Mountain Resort project. You can read the full story here.
Today we're hearing reaction from the community to the council's decision after a long battle over this project.
Alena Callimanis is one of the original members of the La Quinta Residents for Responsible Development.
She tells me she's in shock over city council's decision last night, "We were so excited. But we were still in shock this morning because there was a lot of money behind this project from the developer side and, and it was like a David and Goliath story.”
The group formed last March to raise awareness about the negative impacts of the Coral Mountain Resort project.
"We actually put together a survey monkey petition. And we had 2,500 signatures on it over 2000 just from La Quinta," says Callimanis.
Some people on the other hand, think the City of La Quinta should reconsider the surf park.
Karina Vega, Indio resident and mother of two says, "I think that would have been fun for them, instead of having to drive hours to the beach just to go in the water and being in a crowded area. That would have been something really good for the kids to have to do instead of just being home all day.”
Callimanis shares some of the biggest concerns shared by Valley residents.
"It ranged from the water usage. And when in a mega drought, when we as residents are being fined, if we go a little bit over and you're putting in a wave park, and they ranged all the way to this is a quiet, quiet area here," says Callimanis.
Callimanis says just the wave pool alone would have extended half a mile, "It just boggles my mind to think wave waters that far out, you know that's 13.4 football fields. Just think of 13.4 football fields filled up to six feet of deep water."
