Gerald Ford Never Minded Chevy Chase’s Impression Of Him

SAN DIEGO (AP) – As Chevy Chase never let him forget, Gerald Ford was a bit clumsy at times.

Ford once slipped on the steps coming out of Air Force One. And at least once while playing golf, he hit a spectator in the head with a golf ball.

Chase portrayed Ford as a klutz on “Saturday Night Live,” always popping up from a fall saying “no problem! no problem!”

Ford’s son Jack told AP Radio News at the GOP convention in San Diego in 1996 that he was more sensitive to the jokes than his dad was.

In fact, Jack Ford says at a dinner attended by both Ford and Chase, his dad started his speech by saying “I’m Jerry Ford and you’re not.”
