Dozens of marines arrive in Indian Wells to meet their family for a day. Several families in Indian Wells opened their hearts and their homes, inviting marines to sit down for a Thanksgiving dinner.

“I feel so blessed that we have these people out in the front for us and there’s little enough that we can do at home and to show them that we care and we appreciate what they do and we’re very proud of them,” says host Barbara Baren.

She and her husband,Harvey Baren, jumped at the chance to host marines after hearing about the program from a friend. Harvey knows what it’s like for marines to be away from family during the holidays, he was in the Army himself.

“I was serviced in Germany and being away from home, I welcomed the opportunity of being with other families, which I did, be entertained over there. I know what it feels like and certainly I can see where these marines would like to be at home with us,” says Harvey.

Ceyda Atkins and Gabrielle Duran aretwo of manymarines who are thankful to have a home cooked meal on Thanksgiving day.

“They have families that will adopt marines for the holidays and as soon as I saw that I was like I want to take advantage of that because this is my first time away from home and my family is really close,” says Duran.

“It’s such a wonderful thing to have people that have such kind hearts to welcome people in and they know this time of the year they don’t have family around them so it’s nice to have them in their house. It’s a wonderful thing. I appreciate it,” says Atkins.
