Palm Springs Man Pleads Guilty To Faking Marine Service

RIVERSIDE -A Palm Springs man pleaded guilty this afternoon to charges he impersonated aU.S. Marine.

Thirtynine-year-old Steven Douglas BuThirty ninecused of showing up for his 20-year high school reunion last year wearing a Marine Corps uniform decorated with medals.

Investigators say he bought the medals from E-Bay and military surplus stores including one outside Twentynine Palms.

He reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors, admitting he violated a law prohibiting the unauthorized display of military medals.

Burton could face up to a year in prison and $100,000 in fines.

In court today, the judge ordered a probation report be completed, and assigned a sentencing date for March 1, 2010.
