KESQ Golden Apple Winner Teaches Generations

INDIO – So many teachers work hard and dedicate themselves to their students here in the desert. Every month we honor a teacher making a difference with the KESQ “Golden Apple” award.

For some students, sitting in her classroom is a family tradition.

“I have kids tell my that their mom was in my class,” says Janet Gallatin, Golden Apple winner. “It’s cool.”

Janet Gallatin began teaching 37 years ago. She’s been at James Madison Elementary School for 20 years. In that time, she’s watched her students grow up and have kids, some of which she’s now teaching.

“She is getting multiple generations of students,” says David Karlquist, Principal at James Madison Elementary School.

Gallatin is a pillar of the school, popular among her co-workers, students and parents.

“Every year parents request Mrs. Gallatin,” says Karlquist.

Every year, students who get into her class are sure to get something different. She’s always changing the curriculum, using up-to-date teaching techniques. Her reason for becoming a teacher was to make a difference and change lives, but teaching also changed her life.

“My whole life has been this job, teaching,” says Gallatin. ” If you can hit a few kids every year and make a difference, show them that dreams can be attained.”

Gallatin says her dreams of molding minds came true. Now she’s ready for a new adventure.

“It’s time, it’s time,” says Gallatin.

Gallatin plans to retire soon, but saying goodbye won’t be easy for her or for those who’ve come to know her like family.

“What a loss to Madison Elementary and the teaching profession,” says Karlquist.

“It’ll be a hard thing,” says Gallatin.
