Woman Free On Bail After Alleged Groin Attack

A Palm Springs woman, who police said tried to cut off her husband’s penis with a pair of heavy-duty scissors this weekend, was free on bail Monday morning. The alleged attack happened at the couple’s home on the 1700 block of Rochelle Road.

Virginia Valdez, 69, was jailed by police Saturday evening after her husband called them as he was driving himself to the hospital where he was treated for a non-life-threatening wound in the genital area. “He reported that his wife of 32 years attempted to cut his penis with a pair of scissors,” said Palm Springs Police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff. “We contacted him at a local hospital, subsequently interviewed him, responded out to the location, contacted the wife and arrested her.”

Valdez posted $100,000 bail on Sunday. She faces possible charges of mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon and spousal abuse. “A restraining order was obtained over the weekend,” said Kovaleff. “An emergency protective order, which bars her from having any contact with the victim or being at the location.”

Valdez is scheduled to appear for arraignment at the Indio Larson Justice Center in Indio on Jan. 31.
