FIND Food Bank Feeds 80,000 People

Don Burns calls it his former life — acting in major Hollywood productions alongside Elizabeth Taylor and Clark Cable, modeling for ads and billboards. When he opened the first Baskin-Robbins in New York City, he made the cover of New York Magazine.

“And the next thing you know, Jackie Kennedy was coming in and John John was buying a rocky road (ice cream) cone every day,” Burns said.

But that was the past, a time when he couldn’t imagine living pension check to pension check.

“I have a tough time making it, monthly.”

“It’s pretty bad. You wonder what could happen. I might be living out of my car. Or what are you going to sell?”

With a tough economy and fluctuating gas prices, it can be bard to know how far a pension check is going to stretch.

That’s where FIND Food Bank comes in, serving 80,000 people in the Coachella Valley every month, including those in the senior living complex in Indian Wells where Burns lives. Despite the swanky ZIP code, Mountain View Villas is classified “affordable housing.”

Twice a month FIND volunteers drop off staples to help ends meet – including oats, rice and peanut butter.

“FIND Food Bank, believe me, makes a huge difference in this community,” Burns said.

To volunteer at FIND, you can call its headquarters at 760-775-3463.

You can send a donation at 83-775 Citrus Ave., Indio, CA.

You can also text FIND to 20222 to make a $10 donation — that’s 70 meals.
