Mountain biker dies on trail above Palm Springs

A bicyclist collapsed and died on a trail in the hills south of Araby Cove in Palm Springs Saturday, a police spokesman reported.

Authorities received a 911 call at 1:46 p.m. from a bicyclist that a fellow bicyclist had become dehydrated and passed out, said Palm Springs police Sgt. Mike Kovaleff.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter carrying Palm Springs Fire Department personnel responded, and the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The cause of the death is not known at this time, but police do not believe the cause of death is crime-related at this time,” Kovaleff said.

The uninjured bicyclist was airlifted to safety, according to the sergeant.

The names of the bicyclists were not released.
