6-week-old kitten rescued from underground pipe

A 6-week-old kitten was rescued by animal control workers on Thursday after it got trapped in narrow, underground pipes in Desert Hot Springs.

Riverside County Animal Services spokesman John Welsh said a nursery owner was watering plants when he heard the kitten crying. He couldn’t find where the sound was coming from.

Animal Services workers arrived and determined the crying was coming from underground PVC pipe that was partially exposed in a vacant lot.

“It took quite a while before the officers retrieved the cat because the pipe was so deep,” Welsh said.

Once out of its confinement, the kitten was taken to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms.

“Because it is so young, one of our officers who helped on the scene is planning to foster it,” Welsh said. “Then we’ll put it up for adoption.”
