Dogs and cats can be adopted from the Palm SpringsAnimal Shelter at a special fee of $17.76 tomorrow through Sunday.

“The number of animals in our shelter is very high right now,” shelterdirector Patrice Brayer said. “We are hoping our $17.76 Independence Dayspecial will encourage people who have been thinking about adopting a pet to doit now.”

The normal adoption fee is $60 for a cat and $80 for a dog.

The special fee applies to all cats and dogs over six months old. Theanimals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and given a microchip, and come witha certificate for a free exam from a local veterinarian, according to theshelter.

Brayer said summer is a slow time for both adoptions and donations.

“Conversely, it is a very busy time in terms of stray, lost andsurrendered animals coming into our shelter,” she said.

The shelter, at 4575 E. Mesquite Ave., is open Monday, Wednesday andFriday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. For information, go to http://palmspringsanimalfriends.org orcall (760) 416-5718.
