Twinkies make sweet comeback

The iconic, cream-filled golden sponge cakes are back. Twinkies, now under new ownership, officially hit store shelves nationwide Monday and some Valley folks couldn’t resist but get their hands on them.

The sweet treats made their return after they were pulled in November.

“I have to share or I’ll eat the whole box, I’m not going to lie,” said Irma Martinez, of Thousand Palms.

The Target Superstore in Indio sold out.

“It’s been a crazy, the rush for the Twinkies. They’re gone!” said store manager Nick Duran.

The slogan on each box of 10 says it’s the “Sweetest comeback in the history of ever,” but some people say the wrapped cakes slimmed down in size and taste. A spokeswoman for Hostess, said Monday that the size change was made in “mid-2012,” before the company’s bankruptcy.

“The packaging is a little different but vendors say they all taste the same,” said Duran.

Twinkies may be back on store shelves, but will they make it home to yours?
