Oklahoma man facing criminal charges after DUI hit and run crash in La Quinta

A 59-year-old man suspected of drunk driving after a hit-and-run crash in La Quinta is facing possible criminal charges.

The crash happened around 4:50 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Highway 111 and Jefferson Street, said Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Jon Gaw.

A Palm Desert police officer located the suspect, later identified as Richard Alan Popplewell of Tulsa, Okla., at Jensen’s Market at Simon Drive and Highway 111.

“The investigation revealed that Popplewell was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage,” Gaw said, adding he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit and run.

Popplewell was examined at a hospital, found to be uninjured and was then booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio, Gaw said.

He was released after posting $2,500 bail and was due in court in Indio on Dec. 18.
