How to keep your New Year’s resolution

Year after year as we watch the ball drop, many hope something else drops as well.

“My New Year’s resolution is to get fit this year,” said Ann Legierski, who is a member at World Gym in Palm Springs.

Legierski hopes to shed the 30 pounds she gained while going back to school for her Master’s last year. And she’s not alone.

Almost half of all Americans make a New Year’s resolution, and the most popular one is losing weight.

“There’s this expectation I think to start the new year out with a fresh outlook on life and one of the things that makes us feel good about ourselves is how we look,” Legierski said.

But, just eight percent of people achieve their New Year’s goal. So we got some expert tips on how to stay on track if your resolution is to get healthy.

Tip #1: Don’t go to extremes for quick results. It usually ends up backfiring.

“Definitely the biggest mistake is doing a fast or a 3-day quick cleanse or some kind of gimmicky thing that you see on TV,” said Tiffany Dalton, a nutrition consultant at the Live Well Clinic in La Quinta.

Tip #2: Share your goals with someone who can keep you on track. Get your groceries, cook and work out together.

“It’s about 60 percent better results and that’s if you have accountability,” Dalton said.

Tip #3: Set realistic goals that you can keep throughout the entire year.

“Learning new habits is something you want to be doing. Starting in January is great, but you want to find a way to incorporate those every month of the year,” Dalton said.
