Coachella Valley fly season begins
Lately it feels like an invasion from the horror movie “The Fly.” The insects bug in the kitchen, on your patio and made our news vehicles their resting place.
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District said that’s because spring makes for perfect weather conditions for flies to reproduce thousands at a time.
“It’s been a mild winter, this is the normal time the fly population increases quite significantly,” said Rod Chamberlain, Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District field supervisor.
A homemade fly trap is a way to control the insects. All you need is a bottle, an egg, and water. Mix the egg and water, pour it inside the bottle and poke holes toward the top to trap the flies. Be sure to hang it away from your patio to attract the flies away from you.
Rod Chamberlain, a field supervisor at the district said a trap will bring some relief, but more importantly get rid of fly feeding and breeding materials including your garbage and pet waste.
“It’s real important take steps to make sure garbage is tightly sealed, and no cracks or no holes so flies can’t enter.”
Once the trash is picked up, rinse out leftover materials at the bottom of the can. Pickup pet waste every day or every other day to help minimize the Valley wide problem.
“If everybody takes steps to control the breeding materials it can go a long way to keep the populations under control,” said Chamberlain.
