Fake attorney arrested after targeting Spanish speaking victims

An elderly man has been arrested for posing as an attorney who could help people with bankruptcies, family law, immigration matters and civil and criminal representation, according to the San Bernardino District Attorney’s Office.

Walnut Park resident Joseph Robert Lopez Sr., 76, was taken into custody on February, 27.

The DA’s office charged him with 12 counts of grand theft and nine counts of unauthorized practice of law.

Lopez took money for services he couldn’t deliver. Investigators said he is not, and never has been a licensed attorney. They discovered he specifically targeted Spanish speaking victims.

Authorities believe he scammed people in multiple counties, including San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside.

Lopez is in custody with bail set at $360,000. A hearing is set for March 24 in Rancho Cucamonga Superior Court.

If you feel you’ve been scammed by the suspect, call the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Consumer Protection unit at (909) 891-3330.
