Young victim identified in double-murder suicide

A 13-year-old girl fatally shot along with a woman in a murder-suicide at a Palm Springs condominium was identified Monday.

Melissa Herrold and 43-year-old Cynthia Herrold were killed shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday at their residence in the 1200 block of Sunflower Lane.

Their bodies were found Thursday night along with Delmar Davis, 47, who killed himself, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office. Police said they received reports of at least seven shots being fired, and found all three dead of apparent gunshot wounds.

No one else was inside the residence.

Police Sgt. Paul Abshire said Davis and Cynthia Herrold had an on-and-off relationship, and that a handgun was found in the home.

Palm Springs Unified School District officials confirmed that Melissa Herrold was a student within the district.

Police also found a large arsenal of weapons and several “destructive devices” inside the home. Davis used to work at Guns of Distinction in Palm Springs.
