Man accused of DUI in hit and run
A 55-year-old Indio man was arrested Friday for allegedly crashing a Hyundai into a gas pump in Coachella while driving under the influence, then leaving the scene.
The crash was reported at 11:30 a.m. at an am/pm convenience store and gas station at 48055 Grapefruit Blvd., where witnesses saw the silver vehicle run into a gas pump and watched the driver take off, said sheriff’s Sgt. John Clark.
An employee followed the vehicle to an Arco station at 52138 Harrison St., and detained the driver until police arrived, Clark said.
Eddie Lewis Velez was arrested on suspicion of DUI and taken to a local hospital to be checked out, then was booked into the county jail in Indio. Bail information wasn’t immediately available.
