Gay depictions increase on TV

A new study found that television is increasing its depiction of gay characters.

The media advocacy group GLAAD said Wednesday that 3.9 percent of the characters regularly seen on prime-time network series this season will be gay, lesbian or bisexual. There are more gay characters on cable TV as well, the study found.

But GLAAD said network shows fail to depict any transgender characters, in contrast to those on cable or online series such as “Orange Is the New Black.”

Overall progress on TV comes as the gay community has made strides in areas including the legalization of same-sex marriage in some U.S. states, GLAAD said.
