CVUSD takes action after nude photos of students hit Twitter

Yadira Osuna has five children. One is a senior at Coachella Valley High School.

“They’re always on Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat,” she said.

Osuna admits it’s hard, but she does her best to check their phones, photos and keep up with her kids on all the social media sites. One that’s gotten students in big trouble is Twitter after someone in charge of the @CVHSProbs_ Twitter account leaked nude photos of several Coachella Valley High School students.

“It occurred outside of the school day,” said Darryl Adams, superintendent of the Coachella Valley Unified School District. “We believe they used smart phones and they used their own individual Twitter to distribute nude photos, which is unfortunate and unacceptable.”

Adams said the students did not use school iPads.

“It would’ve blocked that activity. Even if was done at home,” said Adams.

It happened off school grounds, but the school district had to get involved because of the possibility students would retaliate on campus.

“It did become disruptive because the students involved found out their photos are all over the place,” said Adams.

The district found out who was involved and disciplinary action was taken. Adams wouldn’t say what that punishment includes, but the district notified parents and police.

“The sheriff’s department is investigating because if there’s an 18-year-old, who’s an adult, distributing a minor’s nude photo, that’s distributing child pornography. That could be a felony. Even if you’re underage and you’re distributing those photos, that could be a misdemeanor,” said Adams.

“I hope our students learn from this and say, ‘I know not to do that,'” Adams said.

The district asks it parents to be vigilant and help monitor what their children are doing on their personal phones, computers, social media, as well as school electronics they take home.
