Fire sparks in Indio tamarisk trees

Crews worked to put out a smoldering vegetation fire in Indio Monday morning, according to Cal Fire’s April Newman.

Cal Fire confirms 44 firefighters, including inmate fire crews, were on scene for hours to clean up the scene on Avenue 42 and Madison, near the I-10 in Indio.

No one was hurt. The fire started at 5:45 a.m. in large tamarisk trees.

People could see smoke, mixed with dust from nearby tractors, for miles, even after the fire was out. The initial fire created a plume of dark black smoke.

Cal Fire has not released how the fire may have started.
