Man identified in deadly DHS shooting on New Year’s Day

A 22-year-old man from Desert Hot Springs has been identified in a deadly shooting that happened just minutes after people began celebrating the new year.

According to the Desert Hot Springs Police Department, officers were called to the 66190 block of Calle Las Tiendas at 12:24 a.m. on Thursday after gunshots were reported in the area.

They found 22-year-old Leondra Malone suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to to Desert Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

The investigation led police to the 13100 block of Ocotillo Road where they arrested the alleged shooter, 19-year-old Dominick Torres. Torres was booked for homicide and is being held at the Riverside County Jail in Banning, according to the Desert Hot Springs Police Department.

Officers said they’re still looking for the gun that was used in the shooting. There was no further information regarding the investigation or what led police to the suspect.
