An investigation is underway after a man was hit and killed by two cars while crossing Calhoun Street in Indio late Saturday night. Officers said the man wasn’t in a crosswalk when the collision occurred at about 11:42 p.m.

The coroner’s office identified the man as 41-year-old Raul Ruelas Silva of Indio. He died at the scene.

Officers with the Indio Police Department said the crash happened on the 46200 block of Calhoun Street, just south of Taurus Avenue. Ruelas Silva was crossing westbound lanes when he was struck by two cars traveling southbound behind each other.

According to a release, the first car was a Nissan Versa. The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with police. The second car, described as a tan, four-door, late 90’s Toyota Corolla, stopped for a moment but then fled before officers arrived.

Witnesses said the driver is described as a Hispanic man in his mid to late 20’s. He was also said to have a mustache. A Hispanic woman was said to be the lone passenger in the car. Witnesses said she had long brown hair but weren’t sure about her age.

The collision is under investigation. Anyone with information about the accident, or the Toyota Corolla that fled the scene, is asked to call the Indio Police Department at 760-391-4057.
