Man airlifted to hospital after major crash on Hwy. 111

A serious two car crash in La Quinta closed down the westbound side of Highway 111 at Jefferson Street Thursday night for about two hours.

The crash happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Highway 111 and Depot Drive, just in front of the Home Depot.

According to police, a gray Chevy pickup truck was traveling eastbound and the driver was making a left hand turn when the Chevy struck the front right fender of a burgundy-colored Ford Ranger, which was traveling westbound in the center lane.

The man driving the Ford Ranger was seriously injured in the crash and was pinned inside his truck, according to a release from the La Quinta Police Department.

Cal Fire rescued the man and he was airlifted to the hospital nearly an hour after the crash. There’s no word on his condition at this time.

The man driving the Chevy was also taken to the hospital, complaining of pain to his elbow and hip.

Officers said a Nissan Altima sustained minor damage in the crash but the driver wasn’t hurt.

According to police, alcohol doesn’t appear to be a factor in the collision. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about the crash is asked to call La Quinta police at 760-863-8990.
