Power shut out at home, HS track and field athletes advance in CIF state championships

The Palm Springs Power outscored their opponents 34-0 in the last two games, but couldn’t muster a single run in a 5-0 loss to the Southern Nevada Coyotes.

Power pitcher Jeremy Alderman went seven strong innings, allowing three hits, no runs while striking out three batters. But counterpart Cody Roper matched him with seven innings of shutout ball, two-hitting the Power and striking out seven.

The Coyotes broke through in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, scoring two and three runs to end the contest.

CIF STATE TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Five local high school track and field athletes continued their journey to a CIF state championship in Clovis, CA.

La Quinta’s Koty Burton advanced in the 110-meter hurdles, winning his heat with a time of 14.16 seconds. Burton will be one of nine in the 110-meter hurdles final vying for a state championship on Saturday.

In the girls and boys triple jump, La Quinta’s Nirie Boglino and Xavier Prep’s Jah Strange both advanced to Saturday qualifying, each taking the final 12th qualifying spot with jumps of 37-feet, 8.75 inches and 45-feet, 4 inches, respectively.

Shadow Hills’ Jalen Morgan qualified in the boys discus throw with a distance of 169-feet, 10 inches, good enough for 11th place.

In the boys long jump, Yucca Valley’s William Perrance placed seventh with a jump of 22-feet, 11.25 inches to qualify for Saturday.
